I have covered Canadian men’s soccer through some lean years, and I never thought I would be writing this sentence: Canada are in the last 16 of a World Cup. A late Stephen Eustáquio winner buried South Africa in the Round of 32, and the co-hosts are through to a stage they had never reached in six previous tournaments — a country that had never so much as won a point at a men’s World Cup before this summer. The reward is a brute of a test in Houston: Morocco, the side that lit up 2022. Kickoff is 1:00 PM ET on July 4 at NRG Stadium, and for a Canadian audience this is as big as it gets.

What’s at Stake

This is a one-off knockout tie: win and Canada are in a World Cup quarter-final — an idea that would have sounded absurd a month ago — lose and a historic run ends. The winner goes to Foxborough on July 9 to face the survivor of Paraguay vs France, which makes the prize even sweeter and the pressure heavier.

For the neutral, this is a clash of stories. Canada arrive on belief and momentum, a co-host feeding off a continent’s support. Morocco arrive as the tournament’s most credentialed underdog — Africa’s 2022 semi-finalists, who knocked out the Netherlands on penalties in the Round of 32. One of those narratives ends this afternoon in Houston.

The Alphonso Davies Question

Alphonso Davies’ fitness is the biggest team-news call of Canada’s tournament.

Everything for Canada runs through Alphonso Davies, and his fitness is the story of the week. He has been managing a hamstring issue that limited him in the group stage, and he is listed as doubtful — a genuine game-time call on whether he starts. Canada also go without midfielder Ismaël Koné, out with a broken leg suffered against Qatar.

Morocco, by contrast, report a clean bill of health. If Davies is fit enough to start, Canada have a match-winner who can turn a knockout tie on his own; if he is not, the co-hosts lose their sharpest edge against a side that does not hand out many chances.

Canada — belief and a home continent
Through to the last 16 for the first time, powered by a late Eustáquio winner over South Africa. Eight group-stage goals, but transition defence has looked exploitable.
Morocco — pedigree and no passengers
Unbeaten and battle-hardened: a group featuring a draw with Brazil, then the Netherlands beaten on penalties. A fully fit squad and knockout nous.

The Head-to-Head Warning Sign

Here is the number that should temper Canadian optimism: Morocco have never lost to Canada. The sample is small but consistent — a 2–1 win at Qatar 2022, a 4–0 friendly in 2016, a 3–2 in 1984 and a 1–1 in 1994. Opta’s model reflects that gap, giving Morocco a 52.7% regulation win probability to Canada’s 21.7%, with extra time at 25.6%.

None of that is destiny — knockout football rewards the brave, and Canada have already rewritten their own record book once this summer. But the analytics and the history are pointing the same way, and honest betting starts with reading the board as it is, not as a home crowd wants it to be.

The Betting Angle

The market is unambiguous: Morocco are 1.81 (−123) to win in 90 minutes, Canada a big 5.00 (+400), the draw 3.35 (+235). Morocco are also priced as a live dark horse for the whole tournament, in the 29.00–41.00 range, which tells you how the books rate them.

Outcome Selection Odds (decimal) As of (ET)
1 Canada 5.00 July 4, 2026
X Draw 3.35 July 4, 2026
2 Morocco 1.81 July 4, 2026

My honest read: Morocco are the right side, and 1.81 is a fair reflection of class, form and history. The Canadian value play — if you want one — is not the outright win but keeping Canada in it: a draw or a Canada double chance covers the scenario where a fit Davies and a knockout occasion drag Morocco into extra time, where the tie becomes a coin flip.

Example: a CAD $20 stake on Morocco to win at 1.81 returns $36.20 in total ($16.20 profit) if they win inside 90 minutes. Check whether your book settles on regulation time only — extra time is very much in play here.

Conditions in Houston

NRG Stadium has a retractable roof, and it will need it: Houston is forecast for a high near 94°F with a heat index of 100–107°F. Expect the roof closed and the climate controlled, which removes the worst of the heat as a factor and should allow both sides to play at tempo rather than survive the conditions — a small point in favour of Canada’s front-foot instincts.

  • Canada reach the World Cup Round of 16 for the first time in their history after a late win over South Africa.
  • Morocco are unbeaten, fully fit and have never lost to Canada in four previous meetings.
  • Alphonso Davies (hamstring) is a game-time doubt; Ismaël Koné is out with a broken leg.
  • The market makes Morocco 1.81 favourites, Canada 5.00, the draw 3.35; Opta gives Morocco a 52.7% regulation win.
  • Houston’s roof should be closed against extreme heat, keeping conditions controlled.
