Available in USI have watched a lot of group-stage Mondays in my time covering this tournament, and most of them blur together. June 22 will not. By the time the late kickoffs wrapped on the East Coast, the World Cup had a new all-time leading scorer, France and Argentina had both booked their places in the Round of 32, and the Golden Boot market had been redrawn overnight. If you went to bed early on the West Coast, here is everything that mattered — and, more usefully for the readers I write for, what it means for the bets you are about to place.
Messi Rewrites the Record Book
Argentina beat Austria 2–0 in Group J, and Lionel Messi scored both goals — the record-breaker at 38 minutes and a second in stoppage time. That double moved him past Miroslav Klose’s long-standing mark of 16 to become the all-time leading scorer in men’s World Cup history, taking his tally to 18. He had equalled Klose with a hat-trick against Algeria on June 16; six days later he stood alone. Argentina, now on six points with a +5 goal difference, have secured advancement with a game to spare.
For a player in what is almost certainly his final World Cup, the timing could not be scripted better — and the betting market noticed immediately (more on that below). Austria are not out, sitting on three points, but the second qualifying spot in Group J now hinges on results still being confirmed from the Jordan–Algeria fixture.
France and Norway Make Group I a Done Deal at the Top
The most emphatic performance of the day came in Group I. France dismantled Iraq 4–0, with Kylian Mbappé scoring twice on his 100th cap for Les Bleus — a milestone night that lifted France to six points and a +6 goal difference, top of the group and through. Iraq, still without a point, are eliminated.
In the group’s other match, Norway got the better of Senegal, with Erling Haaland on the scoresheet again. That result carried Norway to six points and a place in the next round, while Senegal are out. Both group-toppers are now safely qualified, so the final round of matches in Group I is about seeding and the head-to-head for top spot rather than survival.
What It Means for Canadian Bettors
Here is where I earn my keep. Two results on June 22 moved the markets that matter most to anyone holding tournament futures.
If you backed Messi for the Golden Boot at a longer number earlier in the tournament, you are sitting on real value right now. If you are coming to that market fresh today, the price is a lot less generous than it was 48 hours ago — a reminder that in-tournament futures reward the early mover.

Several heavyweights are now through or commanding their groups: Mexico (Group A), the United States (Group D), Germany (Group E), France and Norway (Group I) and Argentina (Group J).
